Steve's story
Steve Wheately (46) had a heart attack 10 years ago while playing golf with a friend.
"Upon completing the 16th hole, I became very nauseous and sweaty and had a pain in my chest. Thinking I had just pulled a muscle, I continued to play.
It was about 25 minutes from when I first felt pain to when my friend drove me to Queen Mary's A&E where I was immediately admitted.
It was there that I discovered that I'd had a heart attack and was given clot buster medication before being transferred to the hospital later that day for appraisal where I ended up staying for five days."
Steve believes that his smoking was a significant factor that led to his heart attack but he quit immediately after his heart attack.
"I had smoked from the age of 13 until the day of my heart attack when I was averaging 30 roll up cigarettes a day."
Steve's lifestyle has changed dramatically since his heart attack. He now exercises at least four times a week, and reduced the amount of fat in his diet. He has since lost one and a half stone in weight.
"I feel much fitter and stronger than around the time of my heart attack," says Steve
